Western Arnhem Land

Tasmanian Tiger Thylacinus cynocephalus

Language Points

Guugu Yimithirr

In Western Arnhem Land there is a picture of a Tasmanian Tiger (Thylacinus cynocephalus). Scientists think this animal disappeared from the mainland around 4,000/3,000 years ago. It continued to live in Tasmania until recently.

There are also paintings of bilbies, which used to live in Arnhem Land thousands of years ago when the climate was drier. Even though bilbies don’t live in this area any longer, they still live in other parts of the country.
