September 2017 – Songs on Country recording workshop in Canberra
During the school holidays Hope Vale School students Naz McLean, Kyomie Deemal and Lex Bowen Ludwick travelled to Canberra with their Guugu Yimidhirr teacher Lillian Bowen to record some new songs in Guugu Yimidhirr with Joshua McHugh. The kids camped some of the time at Karin’s place in Canberra. They also travelled to Joshua’s family’s home at Cooma in the Snowy Mountains and met Joshua’s little niece Iolani. One day we went to the snow – made a snow man and threw snow balls. Every night Naz played guitar and sang for us – sometimes Slim Dusty songs, sometimes Guugu Yimidhirr songs he made up with Lillian on the spot. We had a lot of fun but the kids worked hard too and they recorded some beautiful songs. Look out for Dhaarba Ngalbaaya and Bama Mugan-mugan sung by our Guugu Yimidhirr trio.
